Alton Brown and Thomas Dolby....same guy???? hmmmmmmm

O.k., so way back in prehistoric Karen-land, I was quite the "new waver"...oh yes, I burned up the dance floor in my Molly Ringwald-esque way...peg leg jeans, off the shoulder ripped up sweatshirts and of course doing the flash dance running routine in my room to drop that pesky extra 20lbs.... It was THE thing in 80's southern California pop scene. I even saw Thomas Dolby at the Santa Barbara bowl....(we won't discuss the Thompson Twins concert I also saw there...ick...) Anyway, fast forward to Christian Homeschool Mom-hood. One of my favorite ways of teaching science in is the kitchen , which of course makes Alton Brown's "Good Eats" indispensible! We love Alton in our house! The other day I thought it would be funny to show our youngest the "She blinded me with science" video on youtube, you know, just to break up the monotony of the day.... and lo and behold there was what looked like an 80's weird guy version of Alton Brown!!! No really, it was Thomas Dolby but I keep thinking , good grief was Alton Brown actually Thomas Dolby in some past weird life???:-) Probably not,lol..but the resemblence is uncanny!! Just add 25 years onto Thomas' face and voila! Alton Brown!:-D
Look for yourself!

Hey, ya wanna buy a house???

Anyone? Anyone???:-/

O.k., so most of you who know us, know that we are trying to sell this big house. We are in need of moving, not because the neighborhood is uncomfortable anymore , on the contrary it's been cleaned up quite nicely. Mostly because Bob needs to find steady work, in particular there are many teaching positions available in the city but you have to be near to take advantage of them. But also, we've been so disappointed in not being able to find a good church here:-( We have prayed and prayed that the Lord would open up a fellowship of His believers here that was not "nutty" in theology, but this area is so divided in doctrine that we feel unsafe doing anything popping into non-denominational churches with our children.

Well, we are listing this house "by owner" right now to save money, but even at the price we're listing it at which is suuuuper low for a 5 bedroom 3000+ sq.ft. house, no one seems to want to come to little McMinnville, no matter how nice our place is. We are trusting though , that the Lord has a buyer for this place:-)

If any of you know anyone who is looking to buy a large home, lol, please direct them to this url. :-)
Deuteronomy 8:6-11

6Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
7For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
8A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;
9A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.
10When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.
11Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

It doesn't get better than this......

A clearly exhaust Caleb with all my picture taking:-)

Caleb at two days old:-)

Here's Caleb at 5 minutes old (After I stopped crying and remembered I had a camera:-)
Here's Caleb last night at our house...He wasn't really sure he was done eating, but his thumb was making him happy none the less:-)

" Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.." Psalm 127:3

Well, as the post title states, it truely does not get better than this:-) My second grandson Caleb Michael arrived at 12:54 am August 15th. After a very fast and ferocious labor, he entered this world right before my eyes and once again I was struck with the incredible fact that the Lord Himself was with us! It was truely amazing... He is so good to give us these gifts, especially considering what a doofus I am :-). Later, I reflected on how all Christ's laboring here is for the bringing of new life! We are given life by His precious Blood and built up in His Body, then when we cast off the old man and walk in His Spirit we share him ,in our co-laboring, we have the priveledge of witnessing the new and eternal life in another! Each one a precious new baby in the Lord. Praise the Lord! Isn't it amazing that all creation witnesses the process of regeneration? In my thinking, it seems if you just watch, it takes so little faith to see Him in everything. Maybe just me, but still He is so evident and real! Well, enough of my gushing:-)

I am so blessed to have Shannon and Jake , who are only 14 and 11 still, that absolutely adore and dote on their two nephews! They are the perfect Aunt and Uncle. Patient ,loving and kind. Shannon will make a spectacular Mommy some day. At 14 she can, with a baby on her hip, make a lunch, get a bottle, and tidy up the living room all at once, all the while singing "God is bigger than the BOOGIE MAN",lol... Jake is the most wonderful rough and tumble Uncle:-) He has such a child like exhuberance yet just enough maturity to make sure Eli doesn't kill himself,lol... They have been helping so much while I do the Grammy thing for the babies and Marissa. And then of course there is "GRAMPY"! He is the star of Elijah's life, without Bob, Eli would be so lost right now. It's hard on Eli to have no Daddy, and a Mommy who is so busy, stressed out and tired. Bob is our earthly rock and provider. Without his love for the Lord which is manifested in his care for all of us, we would be in serious trouble. His devotion to us all, and in particular is attention to Eli to bridge a terrible gap after his Daddy abandoned him,is a gift to witness. But everything is working out just fine and we are being held so tightly in the Lord's embrace. Praise the Lord for arranging things so perfectly for us in the midst of such a fallen world!:-)

It's the end of the world as I know it...and I feel old...:-p is the last day....of my 30's..youch:-) I'm not all that hip on turning 40, in fact that's an understatement. But it's not because I value my youth, or I have any beauty to hold on to,lol.. certainly not because my 30's were such a blast, on the contrary I really wouldn't wish MY 30's on an enemy... It's more a feeling of time wasted, or not seized "enough"..ya know? I guess I'll have to see... Then again, 40 is a very important number in scripture , it's the end of struggling, the end of strife... O.k., I feel better now:-)On another note, and far less pitiful and pathetic...Marissa is dilated to 2, 50% efaced and station 2...contractions are some days alot, some days none..but I do believe my second grandson will be born any day now. Praise the Lord for new life!:-) I'll post pics of my wonderful grandbaby as soon as he arrives.:-)

Give peas a chance....

Like ,peas man......
Here's some of my harvest this morning.... So, today I HAD to take care of the garden, and I mean HAD to... We actually got a bit of rain and that was like the starting gun for every dormant weed in the universe! I had a lot of work, but the soil was so good and chocolate cakey squishy warm in my toes I could have stayed out there for a long time!

It was a nice day, breezy , the air felt clean, in the 80's with a light that reminded me of early favorite time of year.:-) I was able to harvest several things that I'll be processing most of tomorrow because I'm lazy and tired tonight,lol... I did cook a whole turkey today, and served some tonight with sausage stuffing, turkey gravy, baked sweet potatoes and whole wheat rolls. Yummmmmm.....

Psalm 34:8

"O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him."

This and that...

Bob smiles even WITH egg on his face:-)

Here's a nice pic of downtown Savannah GA....

Well I'm still here, just barely sometimes, but still here nevertheless:-) I've been "busy" if you would call it that, with things that feel pretty close to spinning my wheels, but need to be done all the same. I am soooo tired, physically, spiritually, you name it , I'm bone tired.

It's been 6 weeks since Elijah and Marissa moved in with us and that alone is a blessing to have them so near, but at the same time what comes with them, a broken marriage (he left her and filed for divorce and we're helping her contest and find a place to live), an angry soon to be ex (who knows why he's so mad, he left:-/ ) and all the financial strain has been very hard on us all... Soon Kaleb will be here and we are quite worried about how all that will go down. I know the Lord is in complete control and will not give us more than we can handle, but Marissa is displaying alot of depression and a seeming inability to handle much at one time. If there is anything that can be overwhelming, it's having 2 babies under 2 to take care of alone in your own place. Well...
We ended up driving the children to SC to let them vacation at the "resort" my inlaws call home, lol. This was in response to some threatening calls from our son in law. He wants us to stop helping Marissa and we just won't , some of which is because I'm pretty sure God would notice if we through a pregnant lady and her baby out on the street:-/
.. Anyway, my inlaws live in a sun city village type place and I'm telling you, I LOVE it there, but I'd probably DIE of guilt living there..I just don't know if I could.. It's so relaxing and luxurious, I'd have "save the children" commercials running 24/7 in my head and spontaneously combust from the guilt of it all... That's just me, and I'm not saying no one should have that life, I'm just pretty sure I'd only be able to vacation in a place like that. The trip down there, back and then back again to get them was exhausting and it takes me FOREVER to recover from stuff like that:-P

Can we fix it? Yes, that's the question my wise grandson is asking "Bob" in this picture... I stood there watching him commune with that plastic head and asked the Lord the same thing... Can we fix it? He was pretty clear with me that, no, we can't...He can of course, but what does it look like to "let" God fix things? I think we're "doing" everything we can and then I realize we're so busy "doing" that I haven't even noticed what HE is doing... " Meanwhile, back at Walmart, Eli is asking "Bob", can we fix it? and then he yells the answer "YES WE CAN!" LOL.. Out of the mouths of babes....

Here is my sweet heart kitty Abby:-) She's normally the prettiest cat in the universe but here she's doing a spot on impression of me:-D

Psalm 23
1The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Cool lithographs...

These are some pen and ink lithographs that were in the bus behind our barn... They were done by an artist named Travis Johns but I can't seem to find anything about him on the web...They even have funky poetry on them and alot are signed and dated. They're huge, 23x29! Aren't they the coolest?:-) I'm trying to find a market to sell them though, as we don't need dozens of mountain man prints...:-)

Prayer for Mei-Ling.....

I'm asking anyone who reads this to please pray for this sweet baby girl Mei-Ling...She is such a sweet little miracle and so beautiful, but truly needs your prayers for the Lord's healing in her little body... If you'd like to read more about this precious baby and her more detailed prayer needs go to Pat's (Grandma to Mei-Ling) blog
Pray also that her dear Parents , Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles will be comforted and strengthened through such a hard ordeal and that Mei-Ling will be able to come home soon.....

"She looketh well to the ways of her household..."

Okay:-) As oppose to cluttering lists and mail boxes I'm posting these things I have for sale here and if interested I will be happy to answer any questions at all:-) I'm posting my woodstove also, in hopes that someone in the TN/AL area may want one:-D This post and these pics will either be altered or deleted as things hopefully sell:-)

Here are some headcovering and clothing patterns I have , all except the Hiding place patterns are uncut and unused ,I am asking $5ppd for each, if you'd like close up pictures of the veiling patterns, just email and I'll be happy to send them...from Friends patterns I have:"Heart Shaped Covering", "Traditional Headcovering" ,"Jewel Headcovering" , "3 piece Ohio Dress, size L", "Contemporary Mennonite Dress size P/S" and "men's zipper front pants size 38"... From "The Hiding Place" , "Leah hanging veil","Lydia hanging veil", "Elizabeth hanging veil", "Abigail hanging veil" , "Mary hanging veil" and "Tabitha hanging veil"... other patterns are : Hanging, Flowing, Charity,Gathered Bonnet, Round Chapel, and Missionary... Here's my woodstove:-) I hate to part with it but must:-/ Although it IS an antique, it works ,heated our home and cooked our food for quite awhile. It does though need some refurbishing..If you want more info about the stove just let me know:-) It's in our outbuilding and you would need to be quite strong (you and a couple more like you:-). My husband and I moved this with a moving dolly by ourselves though, so it's possible. We are asking $750 or best offer. We'll entertain all offers though.:-)

This is a childs mesh covering with cute! :-) I'm asking $10ppd

Shannon's hair is HUGE under this but I'd say it's a med/large ...asking $10ppd

This seems like a large to me...$30 ppd
This one is a small $30ppd
This one is a sm/med $30ppd

This is an amish maternity/nursing dress, with detachable bodice and apron (pinned). I would say since it's so adjustable it would fit anywhere between a size 6 and a 14/16 depending.. Asking $25ppd for it.

Here are the nursing slits.....and the waist is pinned to account for a growing belly:-)

This dress is a girls dress ,handmade by Ruby Roth for my daughter when she was 11. I would say it's about a size 12..asking 20ppd

This green silky dress is a cape dress with detachable bodice and apron , it also comes with this opaque covering (dear daughter here has a GIANT amount of hair under it so if your bun is less than 20lbs,lol, it'll fit closer on you:-)..I'd say it's probably anywhere between an 8 and 12 but you know how hand made it...I'm asking 35ppd.

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates." Proverbs 31:10-31

Git up n' go needs to git a little faster:-/

Well, it was made abundantly that we need to be headin' off down the road a bit faster than we first anticipated.:-/ I believe we will be headed to Nashville where Bob can pursue his career . As long as we're together, we'll be fine though.:-)
I have moved so many times in my life that you would think I'd be used to this...but alas, as I get older I also get more tired, so these moves become more and more difficult to pull off. I have hopes that one day I will be plopped in the absolute perfect "forever" place (other than heaven:-) and there I will stay, doing all my homesteady granola mom/grammy things:-) Sitting in our rocking chairs , facing west with Bob whittling at my side and me singing a mountain hymn with a joyful heart and hopefully new teeth:-) ...This pic below is something I look at all the time and think "hey, it could happen...." :-)

But I'm not going to indulge in too much wishful thinking and begging ,lol, I've done that before and gotten myself into a pickle...rather I'll pray this....
But godliness with contentment is great gain: for we brought nothing into the world, for neither can we carry anything out; but having food and covering we shall be therewith content 1Tim.6:6-8
Oh Lord give us your strength and your speed, lead us to a good pasture where we may raise our children, dote on our grandchildren and get some much needed rest...amen:-)

Home to the Smokies , but for a day.....

Here I am giving a big thumbs up to the Thunderhead!! That's Bob next to me ,enjoying my hijinks, my sister Erin right behind me apparently catching snow flakes on her tongue?lol..and Shannon next to Erin looking totally exasperated at what a dork her mother is,lol...:-D I wish I could stay, but the soothing sight of my mountains was enough to sustain me for awhile. How grateful I am that I am only 3 hours from God's sitting room.:-) He surely dwells there for rest and relaxation.

Yesterday morning at 6am we took off in the car for a day at Dollywood. It's what Jake wanted to do for his birthday so that's what we did. We get yearly passes because after a couple of visits it pays for itself and it's good clean fun. I love walking around that park hearing the sounds of sweet mountain gospel music coming from the little speakers hiding in the bushes:-)

What made this more fun is that my sister Erin's family came in from Charlotte NC to spend the day there with us. We always have a good time with them.:-)
One thing that is a near obsession of our family is roller coasters! We went on several including our favorites and also the new one Mystery Mine! That was weird , scary and pretty innovative! Somethin' else, hard to describe so if you're inclined to get there, then get on that thing and you'll see!:-)
We're tired today, as 6 hours of driving and 8 hours of walking takes it out of us old fogies,lol... But the sight of the mountains as the sun was setting, and promising them that I would be back soon, has cheered my spirit and made me to worship the Creator of such beauty with all my heart!
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD,which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day,
nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." Psalm 121

Just some stuff:-)

Anyway, yesterday, our youngest turned 11.He is such a hoot and a wonderful boy:-) This birthday for some reason was such a bittersweet thing for me...I guess, when you want so much to have more children but can't, that last precious child becomes even more precious and his days even more valuable than you remember them being just last year. We had a good time though and he is a joy to have for a son.:-) Just as the other two and now the grandchidren are beyond what I ever deserved in my life. I am filled with blessings. If only I could keep that in mind as a stumble around in my frequent pity parties,lol...:-p
In case you can't tell..I am quite down these days:-/ I have become so weary over the trials and traumas of the last several years. More than I can ever write down in a few posts, but suffice to say, I'm wayyy tired. It's not JUST the fact that living in the south has been an exercise in extracting a dripping with honey knife from your back every time we turn around (bless your heart!") Or that I have witnessed the utter and horrible degradation of Christ's church to the extreme through the life of a crazy IFB preacher (uh, if you'r interested, google Dr. Peter S. Ruckman and behold the craziness that was our church...thankfully that's past tense)... so much more though... I thank God though that He has balanced the "awful" with the "awesome" and helped me know to turn to Him through it all. I am forever grateful for that.... He is a wonderful Father and a merciful savior. Even more so I'm grateful that He continues to put up with me and work on me:-) Thankfully the cure for what ails me is death on the cross:-D

On to more/less important things.... Let me preface this by saying I watch very little t.v. but the rant below kinda tells ya can people sit and watch this stuff?
So, being tired of all the junk I have to do,I turn on the t.v. this morning and there is the waste of expensive air space show "The View"...good grief. Aren't there more than enough networks devoted to promoting gay and lesbians as somehow wiser than all of us stupid heteros? Like maybe HGTV?! So anyway, this rant isn't about the seriously demented ,out of control Rosie, but more about the poor excuse of a conservative Elizabeth Hassel-something-or-other.... So they're talking about the no brainer upholding of the partial birth abortion ban--read: murder. Rosie is of course a promoter of all things heinous so she is up in arms at not being able to choose to murder an unborn human up until 40 weeks gestation...And of course Elizabeth weakly pipes in a few times saying "well, I don't agree with that...." snivel snivel.... She ends up saying something along the lines of ,it shouldn't be legal to have partial birth abortions...duh... Rosie in all her weird glory yells..."these fetuses are deformed or dead usually!"... Now does Elizabeth say "WHY SHOULD IT BE LEGAL TO KILL DEFORMED CHILDREN?!" No....she says " if I were pregnant with a deformed baby, I wouldn't choose to do this".... Of course Rosie says like the good pagan she is..." THAT'S YOUR CHOICE, OTHER WOMEN SHOULD HAVE THAT CHOICE ALSO!!" audience erupts into ferocious clapping fit here.... My goodness, the audience on that show would surely throw Rosie a ticker tape parade if she burped the alphabet or something. Every horrible aluminum pyrite nugget that comes out of her mouth impresses them like she's Gandhi or something.
My problem though, is not with the utterly predictable Rosie or why she is being given this forum...but with a woman who professes to be a Christian and a conservative. I wonder if she'll ever figure out that it's her clear impotence as a conservative Christian that provokes ABC to keep her on as the token she clearly is? She is far more infuriating than the crazies they have surrounding her at that table.
I know this all sounds caustic and cynical but I guess I just needed to get it off my chest:-/

So o.k., that's all I have to say about that:-)
Better be gittin' and on to the ever looming house fixing...
Lord get us out of this town , please help us sell our home and move on to a better location. You know our need....AMEN.

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Well, try as I may, to resist the blog craze, I have succumbed to this phenomenon...I don't really have much to say really, at least not today, but I may tomorrow.:-) Some days you really just can't shut me up (just ask Bob;-) I babble like a baboon on speed.. (you can tell I'm no shrinking violet from our pic,huh?:-) but today, I'm reflective, introspective and not my usual groovy self. So because the proverbial well is dry, I won't force the issue and try another day.
I'll be back!
